Cookie Policy

This policy explains the cookies and similar technologies we use on www.theknowhow.uk, why we use them, and how you can control them. It supplements our Privacy Policy.

1. What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file stored on your device when you visit a website. We also use local storage and session storage (similar browser technologies) which work the same way for consent purposes.

2. Consent categories

We group cookies into four categories. Only essential cookies load automatically; all others require your explicit consent via our cookie banner.

2.1 Essential (always on)

Required for the site to function. Cannot be disabled.

  • kh_consent — stores your consent choices (1 year).
  • kh_admin_session — admin authentication token (7 days, httpOnly).
  • next-auth.* — Next.js framework session cookies if applicable.

2.2 Analytics (optional)

Helps us understand how the site is used.

  • Google Analytics 4 / GTM — page views, sessions, events (_ga, _gid, _gcl_au).
  • Microsoft Clarity — session recordings, heatmaps (CLSID, ANONCLK).
  • First-party events — written to our own database (no cookies).

2.3 Marketing & advertising (optional)

Used to measure ad performance and show you relevant content.

  • Meta (Facebook) Pixel — Meta ad attribution (_fbp, _fbc).
  • Meta Conversions API — server-side event mirroring (no cookies; uses hashed IP).
  • TikTok Pixel — TikTok ad attribution (tt_sid).
  • LinkedIn Insight Tag — LinkedIn ad attribution.
  • Microsoft Ads / Bing UET — Bing ad attribution (MUID).
  • Reddit Pixel — Reddit ad attribution (rdt_cid).
  • Beehiiv — newsletter signup tracking.

2.4 Functionality (optional)

  • next-themes — stores your dark/light mode preference (theme).

3. How to manage cookies

You have several options:

  • Cookie banner: click “Customize” to toggle categories individually. Access it again by clearing your browser storage.
  • Browser settings: most browsers let you block or delete cookies in Settings → Privacy.
  • Withdraw consent: clear kh_consent from your browser’s storage — the banner will reappear on your next visit.
  • Opt out of ad personalisation: Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out.

We do not currently respond to browser DNT signals. Use the cookie banner to opt out of non-essential cookies explicitly.

6. Updates to this policy

If we add new cookies, we will update this policy and increment the consent version (which causes the banner to re-appear so you can re-consent).
